I am 18 years old now
Why do I need to fill out a questionnaire ?
To continue receiving family allowance after the age of 18, the child must be in secondary education, an apprenticeship or, in the case of a disability, training adapted to his or her abilities.
In order for the CAE to be able to verify said condition, the payment of family benefits is limited to July 31st every year and is resumed after reception of the questionnaire, as well as any other required document.
If the student fulfils the conditions, payment of family allowance will resume with retroactive effect from 1 August as soon as the documents have been provided.
School certificat
Do I have to join a school certificate to the questionnaire ?
If your child attends a public school in Luxembourg, you don’t have to join a school certificate.
However, if your child attends either a school outside of Luxembourg, a private school in Luxembourg, or a special education school, a school certificate has to be sent in with the questionnaire. The school certificate must be stamped and issued after the beginning of the school year. Certificates of pre-registration are not taken into consideration by our fund.
What to do if I don't have a school certificate yet?
The school certificate must be issued after the beginning of the school year (certificates of pre-registration are not taken into consideration by the CAE). Please send back the questionnaire together with the school certificate. Any arrears will be paid as soon as your file is completed.
Number of lessons per week
What to do if I don’t know my child’s weekly schedule ?
Please refer to the child's school timetable or contact the child's school.
In the case of an apprenticeship, please indicate the number of hours the child attends classes at the school.
Apprenticeship
What documents have to be sent to the CAE in the case of an apprenticeship ?
If the apprenticeship is pursued in Luxembourg, the form must be returned together with a copy of the apprenticeship contract. If the apprenticeship is to be continued outside Luxembourg, the form must be returned together with a copy of the apprenticeship contract and a school certificate.
What should I do if my child has not yet found an employer for his/her apprenticeship?
The questionnaire and the apprenticeship contract must be returned to the CAE once an employer has been found. Payment of the family allowance is temporarily suspended on 31st July until the required documents are received, and the arrears due from August onwards are paid as soon as the file is complete.
Do I have to send in the apprenticeship contract again if I already sent it in last year?
No, unless the apprentice has changed employers.
What should I do if my child is doing an apprenticeship without an employer? (e.g. 1st year of the apprenticeship is held entirely in school)
If the child is pursuing an apprenticeship in which the first year is spent full-time at the school, please complete and return the questionnaire.
If the entire apprenticeship takes place without an external employer (e.g. the school is the apprenticeship employer), please attach a training agreement drawn up by the school.
Dropout or resumption of studies
What should I do if my child stops studying or drops out during the school year?
If your child stops or drops out of school during the school year, you must inform the CAE within three days. Payment of the family allowance will stop on the first day of the month following the stop or dropout of school.
Is the payment maintained if my child stops school due to illness ?
In the event of an interruption in studies due to health reasons, payment of the family allowance may be paid until the 31st July of the current school year, under the condition that a medical certificate is provided.
My child has gone back to school. How do I declare this?
If your child is returning to school, please send us a recent school certificate issued after the start of the school year.
Retake exam
What to do in case of a retake exam ?
Please wait for the result of the child's retake exam before returning the questionnaire. If the child continues a secondary education after the exam, child benefit will be paid retroactively from 1 August.
Employment during the school year
Can a student work while studying?
Yes, if the student takes up paid employment without interrupting their secondary education, they are still entitled to child benefits unless the period of employment exceeds 4 months and the average gross salary received is higher than the minimum social wage.
The CAE must be informed of any start of paid employment within three days.
Back-to-school allowance
When is the back-to-school allowance paid?
Beneficiaries of the monthly scheme receive their back-to-school allowance at the end of August, while beneficiaries of the differential scheme receive it at the end of January, together with the differential allowance, calculated for the period from July to December.
Will the French back-to-school allowance (ARS) be deducted from the benefits paid in Luxembourg?
Yes, if you receive an « allocation de rentrée scolaire » (ARS) in France, it will be deducted from your Luxembourg child benefits.
Higher education
What should I do if my child is in higher education?
If you are pursuing higher education, please note that you are no longer entitled to Luxembourg family allowances from the date on which you complete your secondary education. To find out if you are eligible for assistance from the Ministry of Research and Higher Education, please go to www.mengstudien.lu, under the heading AIDE FINANCIERE DE L'ETAT - AIDEFI, quoting the student's registration number.
The AIDEFI application (student grant) has been refused. Can the CAE pay the family allowance?
The CAE may re-examine the application on the basis of the AIDEFI refusal and a school certificate issued after the start of the school year. To do this, return the completed and signed application form, enclosing the AIDEFI refusal and the school certificate.
Miscellaneous
Can an adult student receive the family allowance to his or her own bank account?
Yes, children who have reached the age of majority can receive the allowance on their own behalf by submitting a written request, enclosing a bank statement (RIB) and a colour copy of a valid identity document.
Who must sign the questionnaire?
The person receiving the family benefits.
In what cases are family benefits no longer due ?
Family benefits are no longer due in the following cases :
• Your child has reached the age of 25 years.
• Your child no longer pursues a secondary education beyond the age of 18 years
• Your child no longer pursues neither education nor training adapted to its abilities in a specialised institute or center, nor any secondary education outside of Luxembourg.
