Application for continuation of child benefit for children over 18

To continue receiving the child benefit beyond the age of 18, the child must continue secondary education, an apprenticeship, or training adapted to their abilities in case of disability.
To verify this study condition, the payment of the child benefit is limited to July 31 of each year for children over 18 and resumes only after submission of the online application « Application for continuation of family benefit for children over 18 », accompanied, where applicable, by other required documents.
If the child meets the study condition, the child benefit payment resumes with retroactive effect from August 1 as soon as the documents have been provided.

If the child attends a public institution in Luxembourg, you do not need to attach a study certificate.
However, if the child attends an institution outside Luxembourg or an independent private institution in Luxembourg, or if it is a training program for persons with disabilities, a study certificate must be attached.
The certificate must be recent, signed, stamped, and issued after the start of the school year. Certificate of enrolment or pre-enrolment are not accepted by the CAE.

The school certificate must be issued after the start of the school year (enrolment certificates are not accepted by the CAE as proof of studies). Submit the application together with the valid school certificate if the child is in a situation where a certificate is required (e.g., private school, school abroad, or special needs training). Arrears will be paid as soon as the file is complete.

In the case of an apprenticeship, you must indicate the number of hours spent attending classes at the school.

If the apprenticeship is pursued in Luxembourg, the application must be submitted with a copy of the apprenticeship contract. If pursued outside Luxembourg, the application must be submitted with a copy of the apprenticeship contract and a school certificate.

(e.g., 1st year of apprenticeship followed full-time at the school and without an employer)

If the first year of training takes place full-time at school, please submit the application and attach an explanatory letter stating that this is a training program without an employer, instead of an apprenticeship contract.

If the entire apprenticeship takes place without an external employer (e.g. the school is the apprenticeship employer), please attach a training agreement drawn up by the school instead of an apprenticeship contract.

If the child stops or drops out of school during the school year, the CAE must be informed about it within three days. The payment of the family benefit stops on the first day of the month following the stop or dropout of school.

In the event of an interruption in studies due to health reasons, the payment of the child benefit may be maintained until July 31 of the current school year, under the condition that a medical certificate is provided.

If the child is returning to school, please send us a recent school certificate issued after the start of the school year.

Please wait for the result of the child's retake exam before submitting the application. If the child continues a secondary education after the exam, child benefit will be paid retroactively from 1 August.
   

Yes, if the child pursues an employed activity without interrupting their secondary studies, they are still entitled to child benefit unless the period of employment exceeds 4 months and the average gross salary received is higher than the minimum social wage.

The CAE must be informed of any start of employed activity within three days.

Beneficiaries of the monthly scheme receive the back-to-school allowance at the end of August, while beneficiaries of the differential scheme receive it at the end of January, together with the differential child benefits, calculated for the period from July to December.

Yes, if you receive an « allocation de rentrée scolaire - ARS » in France, it will be deducted from your Luxembourg child benefits.    

In case of continuation of higher education, please note that there is no longer any right to the Luxembourg child benefits from the date of completion of secondary studies. To find out if the student is eligible for assistance from the Ministry of Research and Higher Education, please go to www.mengstudien.lu, under the heading AIDE FINANCIERE DE L'ETAT - AIDEFI, quoting the student's registration number.

The file can be re-examined by the CAE based on the AIDEFI refusal and a school certificate issued after the start of the school year. To this end, submit the application, attaching the AIDEFI refusal and the school certificate.

Yes, children who have reached the age of majority can receive the child benefit on their own behalf by submitting a written request, enclosing a bank statement (RIB) and a colour copy of a valid identity document.

The recipient of the child benefit (the person receiving the benefits).

Child benefits are no longer due in the following cases:

• Your child has reached the age of 25 years.

• Your child no longer pursues a secondary education beyond the age of 18 years

• Your child no longer pursues neither education nor training adapted to its abilities in a specialised institute or center, nor any secondary education outside of Luxembourg.

• Your child pursues higher education (university or college).

• Your child is employed for more than four months, and the average gross salary received is greater than or equal to the social minimum wage.
